History:
Panzanella originated in the Tuscan region of Italy, where farmers made use of stale bread by combining it with fresh vegetables, olive oil, and vinegar. Originally prepared without tomatoes, the salad evolved after tomatoes became common in Italian cuisine during the 18th century.
Modern variations of Panzanella have embraced seasonal fruits such as peaches, nectarines, and strawberries. The addition of strawberries reflects contemporary Mediterranean cooking, where sweet fruit is often paired with tomatoes, basil, and balsamic vinegar to create refreshing summer dishes.
