Algerian Kefta is a spiced meat dish made with ground beef or lamb, herbs, and warm spices, served grilled or in a rich tomato sauce.

- 500 gram ground beef or lamb
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 egg (optional for binding)
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
- 2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
- 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes (if making tomato sauce)
- 1 tsp tomato paste
- 1/2 tsp red chili flakes (optional for heat)
In a large bowl, mix ground meat, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, paprika, salt, and pepper.
If needed, add an egg and breadcrumbs for binding.
Shape the mixture into small patties or meatballs.
Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat and cook the kefta until browned on all sides (about 10-12 minutes).
If making a tomato sauce, add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and chili flakes to the pan and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Serve hot with couscous, rice, or fresh bread.
