Algerian Kefta is a spiced meat dish made with ground beef or lamb, herbs, and warm spices, served grilled or in a rich tomato sauce.

Ingredients
  

  • 500 gram ground beef or lamb
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 egg (optional for binding)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
  • 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes (if making tomato sauce)
  • 1 tsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 tsp red chili flakes (optional for heat)

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, mix ground meat, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • If needed, add an egg and breadcrumbs for binding.
  • Shape the mixture into small patties or meatballs.
  • Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat and cook the kefta until browned on all sides (about 10-12 minutes).
  • If making a tomato sauce, add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and chili flakes to the pan and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  • Serve hot with couscous, rice, or fresh bread.

Notes

  • Kefta can also be grilled for a smokier flavor.
  • Adjust spices according to taste preference.
