- 4 egg yolks
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Optional: pinch of cinnamon
Whisk egg yolks and sugar until pale and thick.
Heat milk and cream in a saucepan until warm but not boiling.
Slowly pour warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking.
Return mixture to the saucepan and cook on low until slightly thickened.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and nutmeg.
Add alcohol if using and mix well.
Chill in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
