Cuisine ancient rome, European
- 1 bottle red wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Zinfandel)
- ¼ cup brandy (optional, for extra depth)
- ¼ cup honey or sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 orange, sliced
- 1 lemon, sliced (optional)
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 5 whole cloves
- 2 star anise
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- ½ tsp nutmeg (optional)
- Fresh cranberries or apple slices for garnish (optional)
Step 1: Heat the Wine
In a large saucepan, combine the red wine, brandy, and honey (or sugar) over low heat. Do not let it boil, as this can burn off the alcohol.
Step 2: Add the Spices & Citrus
Add orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and nutmeg to the pot. Stir gently to combine.
Step 4: Strain & Serve
Remove from heat and strain out the spices and citrus slices.
Pour into mugs, garnish with fresh cranberries or apple slices, and enjoy warm!
- Do not let the wine boil—heat it gently to preserve its rich flavors.
- Adjust the sweetness by adding more honey or sugar if needed.
- For a non-alcoholic version, use grape juice or cranberry juice instead of wine.
