Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups canned baked beans (or navy/pinto beans, drained)
  • ½ cup Dr Pepper soda
  • ¼ cup bourbon
  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped
  • ½ cup bell pepper, chopped
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • In a large bowl, combine beans, Dr Pepper, bourbon, onion, bell pepper, brown sugar, barbecue sauce, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Stir until well mixed.
  • Transfer mixture to a baking dish and sprinkle bacon on top if using.
  • Bake uncovered for 50–60 minutes, stirring once halfway, until thick and bubbly.
  • Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use quality bourbon for best flavour.
  • Alcohol cooks off during baking, leaving only depth.
  • Adjust sweetness by reducing brown sugar.
  • Bacon is optional but adds smokiness.
  • Beans thicken as they cool.
