- 4 cups canned baked beans (or navy/pinto beans, drained)
- ½ cup Dr Pepper soda
- ¼ cup bourbon
- ½ cup onion, finely chopped
- ½ cup bell pepper, chopped
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
In a large bowl, combine beans, Dr Pepper, bourbon, onion, bell pepper, brown sugar, barbecue sauce, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
Stir until well mixed.
Transfer mixture to a baking dish and sprinkle bacon on top if using.
Bake uncovered for 50–60 minutes, stirring once halfway, until thick and bubbly.
Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
- Use quality bourbon for best flavour.
- Alcohol cooks off during baking, leaving only depth.
- Adjust sweetness by reducing brown sugar.
- Bacon is optional but adds smokiness.
- Beans thicken as they cool.
