- Tropical Summer Drink
- 4 cups cold water
- ½ cup granulated sugar, or to taste
- ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
- 2 cups ice cubes
- Lime slices or wedges, for garnish
- Fresh mint leaves, optional
Thoroughly wash and scrub the limes under cool running water. Since the lime peel may come into contact with the drink during blending, clean fruit is especially important.
Cut each lime into small wedges. Remove the thick white center pith and as many seeds as possible. Keeping some peel contributes a wonderful citrus aroma, but too much peel or prolonged blending can make the drink bitter.
Add the lime pieces and cold water to a blender. Pulse or blend very briefly—just enough to release the lime flavor. Avoid prolonged blending because excessive blending of the peel can produce unwanted bitterness.
Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a large pitcher. Press gently with a spoon to extract the liquid, but avoid forcing too much pulp and peel through the strainer.
Stir in the sugar while the lime mixture is cold. Taste and adjust according to the sweetness of your limes.Stir in the sweetened condensed milk until completely incorporated. The drink should become slightly creamy with a pale, refreshing appearance. Add plenty of ice cubes and stir well. For an especially cold drink, chill the mixture in the refrigerator for several minutes before serving.
Pour the Brazilian Lemonade into chilled glasses. Garnish with a lime wedge or slice and a small sprig of fresh mint if desired. Serve immediately.
- Use fresh limes: Freshly prepared lime juice gives the best flavor and aroma.
- Do not over-blend: Excessive blending can extract bitterness from the lime peel.
- Strain carefully: A fine-mesh strainer helps create a smoother drink.
- Adjust sweetness: Lime acidity varies, so taste before adding more sugar.
- Keep it cold: Brazilian Lemonade tastes best when served immediately over plenty of ice.
- Condensed milk is optional: You can make a simpler, non-creamy limeade without it.
- Serve fresh: The flavor is best shortly after preparation.
- Watch the peel: If your limes have particularly thick or bitter skins, use more juice and less peel.
