Buttery Butterflake Rolls Delight Soft, Flaky, Golden Pull-Apart
Shruthi
Butterflake Rolls are soft, buttery, and beautifully layered yeast rolls that bring elegance and comfort to any meal. Their delicate pull-apart structure gives them a distinctive texture that sets them apart from standard dinner rolls. Made with a rich dough and brushed generously with butter, they bake up golden, fluffy, and irresistible. These rolls are ideal for holidays, dinner parties, or family meals where homemade bread adds an extra-special touch. Though simple ingredients form the base, the shaping method creates a refined bakery-style result. Warm from the oven, Butterflake Rolls are tender, fragrant, and perfect for serving with both savory dishes and sweet spreads.

For the Dough
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 3/4 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
For Layering and Finishing
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- Extra butter for greasing the muffin tin
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, salt, egg, softened butter, and the activated yeast mixture.
Gradually add the flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
Cut the dough into rectangles, about 2x4 inches in size.
Brush each rectangle with melted butter, then fold in half.
Place folded pieces, folded edge down, into greased muffin cups, fitting 2 to 3 pieces in each cup.
Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
Bake for 15 to 18 minutes until golden brown.
Brush with more melted butter while warm and serve.
- Use warm, not hot, liquid to activate the yeast properly.
- Dough should be soft and slightly tacky, not dry.
- Muffin tins help create the classic upright layered shape.
- Melted butter between folds gives the rolls their flaky texture.
- Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place.
- These rolls are best served warm for the softest texture.
- You can prepare the dough ahead and refrigerate after shaping.
- Brushing with butter after baking keeps them extra soft and flavorful.
