- 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine
- 1 orange (sliced)
- 2–3 tablespoons sugar or honey (to taste)
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anise (optional)
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
Pour the red wine into a large saucepan and heat gently over low heat.
Add orange slices, sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, ginger, and orange zest.
Warm the mixture slowly for 15 minutes without letting it boil.
Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
Remove from heat, stir in rum or brandy if using, strain, and serve hot.
- Do not boil the wine, as it reduces alcohol and affects flavour.
- Use a dry red wine like Merlot, Pinot Noir, or Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Adjust sweetness according to personal preference.
- Fresh spices give the best aroma.
- Can be kept warm on very low heat for serving.
