- 2½ cups warm water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter, for cooking
- ½ cup grated mozzarella or queso blanco

Prepare the Water
Pour the warm water into a large mixing bowl.Add the salt and melted butter.Stir until the salt is well dissolved.
Add the Cornmeal
Gradually add the pre-cooked cornmeal while stirring continuously.Mix with your hands or a wooden spoon until the ingredients begin forming a soft dough.
Knead the Dough
Gently knead the dough for approximately 2–3 minutes.The dough should be smooth, soft, and easy to shape.It should not feel dry or excessively sticky.
Check the Consistency
After resting, gently knead the dough again.If cracks appear when you shape it, add a little warm water.If the dough is too wet, add a small amount of cornmeal.
Divide the Dough
Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.Roll each portion into a smooth ball.
Preheat the Pan
Heat a large non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat.Lightly grease the surface with oil or butter.
Cook the Arepas
Place the arepas onto the hot skillet.Cook for approximately 5–7 minutes per side.They should develop a lightly golden crust.
Add Cheese
For cheese arepas, sprinkle or place cheese on top during the final few minutes of cooking.Alternatively, carefully slice the cooked arepa and add cheese inside.
Serve Warm
Transfer the cooked arepas to a serving plate.Brush with a little butter if desired.Serve immediately.
