Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, finely chopped (about 8 cups)
  • 1 large carrot, grated
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely minced
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp white vinegar
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

  • Prepare the vegetables: Finely chop the cabbage, grate the carrot, and mince the onion. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
  • Make the dressing: In a separate bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, buttermilk, whole milk, white vinegar, sugar, salt, black pepper, and lemon juice until smooth.
  • Combine and mix: Pour the dressing over the chopped vegetables. Stir until the vegetables are evenly coated.
  • Chill: Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Serve: Give the coleslaw a final stir before serving. Enjoy as a side dish with fried chicken, barbecue, or sandwiches.

Notes

  • For authentic texture, chop the cabbage and vegetables finely.
  • Allow the coleslaw to chill for a minimum of 2 hours for the best flavor.
