Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • ½ cup moong dal (yellow lentils)
  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 green chili (optional, chopped)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 small tomato (chopped)
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 4 cups water (adjust for consistency)
  • ½ tsp garam masala (optional)
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1 tsp lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  • Wash & Soak: Rinse rice and dal thoroughly and soak for 15 minutes.
  • Sauté Aromatics: Heat ghee in a pressure cooker or pot, add cumin seeds, and let them splutter. Add onions and sauté until golden.
  • Cook Tomatoes & Spices: Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric, and salt. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
  • Add Rice & Dal: Drain and add the soaked rice and dal to the pot. Stir well.
  • Add Water & Cook: Pour in 4 cups of water, mix well, and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles (or cook in a regular pot until soft and mushy).
  • Final Touch: Open the lid, mash slightly for a creamy texture, and add garam masala and lemon juice if desired.
  • Garnish & Serve: Sprinkle fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with ghee, yogurt, or pickles.

Notes

  • Adjust the water to achieve your preferred consistency – thicker for a porridge-like texture or thinner for a soup-like version.
  • You can add vegetables like carrots, peas, or beans for extra nutrition.
