Ingredients
  

  • 1 loaf day-old bread (French bread or brioche), cubed
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream (optional for richness)
  • ¾ cup sugar (white or brown)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions
 

  • Grease a baking dish and evenly spread the bread cubes inside.
  • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, butter, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, pressing gently to soak.
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight, or let rest for at least 30 minutes.
  • Bake uncovered at 180°C (350°F) for 40–45 minutes until set and golden.
  • Serve warm with syrup, fruits, or powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Day-old bread absorbs custard better than fresh bread.
  • Brioche or challah gives a richer texture.
  • You can reduce sugar if serving with sweet toppings.
  • Let it cool slightly before slicing for cleaner portions.
  • Add-ins like raisins or chocolate chips work well.
