Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 3 tbsp butter (softened)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 3 tbsp fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil (chopped, optional)
  • ¼ cup melted butter (for brushing)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan or mozzarella (optional, for cheesy version)

Instructions

  • Activate yeast:
Mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  • Make dough:
Add flour, salt, and softened butter. Knead until smooth and elastic (8–10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes with mixer). Cover and let rise for 1 hour, until doubled in size.
  • Prepare garlic butter:
Mix melted butter with minced garlic and herbs.
  • Shape bread:
Roll dough into a rectangle, brush with garlic butter, and sprinkle cheese (if using). Cut into strips, stack them, and slice into squares. Place upright in a greased loaf pan.
  • Second rise:
Cover and let rise for 20–30 minutes.
  • Bake:
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes until golden brown. Brush with extra garlic butter before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh herbs for best flavour.
  • Bread flour can be used for a chewier texture.
  • Add chili flakes for a spicy kick.
  • The loaf can be shaped in a bundt pan for a round pull-apart version.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the oven at 300°F for 5–7 minutes.
