For the Coney Sauce

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon celery salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

For Serving

  • Hot dogs
  • Hot dog buns
  • Yellow mustard
  • Finely diced onions
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Place the ground beef in a large saucepan or Dutch oven with 1 cup of water. Break the meat into very fine crumbles using a potato masher or wooden spoon.
  • Cook over medium heat until the beef is fully browned.
  • Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, beef broth, tomato paste, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar.
  • Add the chili powder, paprika, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, celery salt, salt, and black pepper.
  • Reduce the heat to low and cook uncovered for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly while remaining spoonable.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  • Spoon the warm Coney sauce over each hot dog and top with mustard, diced onions, and shredded cheese if desired.
