Instructions
Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Line two baking trays with parchment paper.Make sure your butter is softened but not melted. Soft butter combines easily with sugar and helps create a smooth, workable cookie dough.
Place the softened butter and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl. Beat for about 2–3 minutes until the mixture looks pale and fluffy.Add the egg and vanilla extract, then beat until fully combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure an even mixture.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms. If the dough seems too dry or crumbly, add milk a teaspoon at a time. Avoid adding too much liquid because the dough should hold its shape when molded.
Divide the dough into two portions. Leave one portion plain for the vanilla-colored details.Add the cocoa powder to the second portion and knead gently until the chocolate dough is evenly colored. If the cocoa makes it slightly dry, add a small amount of milk.Wrap both dough portions and refrigerate for about 30–45 minutes. Chilled dough is easier to shape and helps the cookies maintain their design during baking.
Take small portions of the chocolate dough and roll them into short logs or oval shapes to form the owl bodies. Flatten them slightly so they sit securely on the baking tray. For a classic owl design, make the body approximately 5–6 cm long. Leave enough space between cookies because the dough may spread slightly in the oven.
Roll small portions of vanilla dough into balls and flatten them into round discs. Place two discs side by side near the top of each chocolate body to create large owl eyes.Press the edges gently so the vanilla dough attaches to the chocolate dough. Add a chocolate chip or candy pupil to the center of each eye.
Add a small chocolate chip or orange candy piece between the eyes to create a beak. Gently pinch or shape the upper corners of the chocolate dough to suggest owl ears.Use a toothpick or the edge of a small knife to make light feather marks if desired. Avoid pressing too deeply, as this can cause the cookie to crack.
Arrange the shaped cookies on the prepared trays, leaving about 5 cm between them. Bake for 10–14 minutes, depending on their size and thickness. The edges should look set while the centers remain slightly soft. Avoid waiting for the cookies to become very dark, as that can make them dry.
Let the cookies cool on the baking tray for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.Allow them to cool completely before adding any decorations that may melt. If needed, attach candy eyes or other toppings with a tiny dab of melted chocolate.Serve the Hoot Owl Cookies on a platter or package them in food-safe bags for parties and gifts.
Notes
Use softened butter: It makes the dough easier to mix and shape.
Measure flour accurately: Too much flour can create dry, crumbly cookies.
Chill the dough: Cold dough helps the owl shapes hold together.
Avoid overworking the dough: Excessive kneading can make the cookies tougher.
Keep the eyes symmetrical: Similar-sized dough discs help create a recognizable owl face.
Use small decorations: Mini chocolate chips work well for pupils and beaks.
Watch the baking time: Smaller cookies may bake faster than larger ones.
Cool before storing: Warm cookies can create moisture inside the container and lose their crisp texture.
