Ingredients

For the Cookie Crust

  • 24 chocolate sandwich cookies
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the Ice Cream Layer

  • 1½ quarts vanilla ice cream, slightly softened
  • 1 cup hot fudge sauce, divided
  • ½ cup chopped roasted peanuts or walnuts, optional

For the Topping

  • 8 ounces whipped topping, thawed
  • ½ cup hot fudge sauce
  • ¼ cup mini chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup chopped nuts
  • Chocolate shavings, optional

Instructions

Prepare the Pan

  • Line a 9 × 13-inch baking dish with parchment paper or foil, leaving some overhang on the sides.
This will make it easier to lift the frozen dessert from the pan later.

Make the Cookie Crust

  • Place the chocolate sandwich cookies in a food processor and pulse until finely crushed.
Add the melted butter and pulse until the crumbs resemble wet sand.

Press the Crust

  • Transfer the cookie mixture to the prepared baking dish.
Press it firmly into an even layer using the back of a spoon or the bottom of a measuring cup.
Place the crust in the freezer for approximately 15–20 minutes to firm up.

Add the Ice Cream

  • Allow the vanilla ice cream to soften slightly at room temperature.
Spread it evenly over the chilled cookie crust.
Work quickly so the ice cream does not melt excessively.

Add Hot Fudge

  • Warm the hot fudge sauce just enough to make it spreadable.
Drizzle or gently spread about half of the sauce over the ice cream.
Sprinkle with chopped nuts if using.

Freeze

  • Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or foil.
Freeze for at least 4–6 hours, preferably overnight, until completely firm.

Add the Whipped Topping

  • Spread the whipped topping evenly over the frozen ice cream layer.
Drizzle the remaining hot fudge sauce over the top.
If the fudge is too thick, warm it very gently before drizzling.

Garnish and Serve

  • Sprinkle with mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts, and chocolate shavings.
Allow the dessert to sit at room temperature for approximately 5–10 minutes before slicing.
Cut into squares or bars with a sharp knife and serve immediately

Notes

  • Ice cream: Vanilla is classic, but chocolate, coffee, or chocolate-chip ice cream can also be delicious.
  • Cookie crust: Chocolate sandwich cookies create a rich crust, but chocolate wafer cookies can also be used.
  • Fudge sauce: Use a thick, high-quality hot fudge sauce for the best texture.
  • Softening ice cream: Let the ice cream soften only until spreadable; avoid allowing it to melt completely.
  • Nuts: Peanuts provide a classic sundae flavor, while pecans and walnuts offer different variations.
  • Whipped topping: Make sure the topping is fully thawed before spreading.
  • Freezing: The dessert must be completely firm before slicing.
  • Storage: Keep covered and frozen until ready to serve.
