Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon honey or sugar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, combine whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Pour in the buttermilk and mix gently until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
  • Place the dough on the baking sheet and cut a deep cross on the top. This helps the bread cook evenly.
  • Bake for 35–40 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Allow the bread to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with butter or jam.

Notes

  • Buttermilk reacts with baking soda to help the bread rise.
  • The dough should be soft but not sticky.
  • Do not overmix the dough to avoid tough bread.
  • Whole wheat flour gives the bread its signature nutty flavor.
  • A cross cut on top allows heat to reach the center.
  • Traditional recipes often include oats or bran.
  • The bread tastes best fresh the same day.
  • It can also be toasted the next day for breakfast.
