- 8 slices soft white sandwich bread
- 6–8 slices cooked ham
- 6–8 slices mozzarella, provolone, or fontina cheese
- 2 tablespoons softened butter
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, optional
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
Prepare the Bread
Lay the bread slices on a clean work surface. If desired, lightly trim the crusts for a softer, more delicate sandwich. Keeping the crusts is perfectly fine if you prefer extra texture.
Prepare the Butter Mixture
In a small bowl, combine the softened butter with the Italian seasoning and black pepper.Mix well. This seasoned butter adds flavor while helping the outside of the sandwich become beautifully golden.
Add the Optional Spread
If using mayonnaise, spread a very thin layer on the inside of each slice of bread.Avoid using too much because excess moisture can make the sandwich greasy.
Layer the Filling
Place a slice or two of cheese on one piece of bread.Add the ham.Top with another layer of cheese. The cheese on both sides helps create a delicious melted filling while also helping hold the sandwich together.
Add Optional Ingredients
If desired, add a few thin slices of tomato, roasted red pepper, sautéed mushrooms, spinach, or fresh basil.Keep the filling relatively thin so the sandwich closes securely and toasts evenly.
Close the Sandwich
Place another slice of bread on top.Press gently but firmly.Repeat with the remaining bread and filling.
Butter the Outside
Spread the seasoned butter lightly over the outside of each sandwich. For a crispier result, make sure the entire outer surface is lightly coated.
Heat the Pan
Place a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.Allow it to warm gradually.Medium-low heat is important because it gives the cheese enough time to melt before the bread becomes too dark.
Toast the Sandwiches
Place the stuffed sandwiches in the skillet.Cook for approximately 3–5 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula.Turn them when the underside is golden brown.
Melt the Cheese Completely
Continue cooking until both sides are crisp and golden and the cheese inside has melted. If the bread is browning too quickly, reduce the heat.
Rest Briefly
Transfer the sandwiches to a cutting board.Allow them to rest for 1–2 minutes. This makes them easier to cut while keeping the melted cheese inside.
Slice and Serve
Cut each sandwich diagonally into triangles or into smaller strips.Serve immediately while hot and crispy.
- Bread: Soft sandwich bread works well, but rustic white bread can also be used.
- Cheese: Mozzarella gives a stretchy texture, while provolone and fontina provide stronger flavor.
- Ham: Use your favorite cooked ham or deli-style ham.
- Butter: A light layer is enough to create a golden crust.
- Heat: Medium-low heat prevents the bread from burning before the cheese melts.
- Vegetables: Watery vegetables should be used sparingly to avoid soggy toast.
- Filling: Avoid overstuffing because thick sandwiches are harder to toast evenly.
- Serving: Toast Farcito tastes best immediately after cooking.
