Ingredients

  • 5 sheets matzo
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tbsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Chopped nuts
  • sea salt
  • sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper and place a layer of matzo on it, breaking pieces as needed to cover the entire sheet.
  • Prepare the Toffee:
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil. Continue to boil for 3 minutes without stirring. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and salt.
  • Spread the Toffee:
Pour the toffee mixture over the matzo, spreading it evenly with a spatula to cover all the pieces.
  • Bake the Matzo:
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, until the toffee is bubbling all over. Keep an eye on it to prevent burning.
  • Add the Chocolate:
Remove the matzo from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a few minutes until they start to melt. Then, use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
  • Optional Toppings:
If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts, sea salt, or sprinkles over the melted chocolate.
  • Cool and Break:
Let the matzo crack cool completely. You can speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator for about an hour. Once it's fully cooled and the chocolate is set, break it into pieces.
  • Serve:
Enjoy your delicious matzo crack as a sweet snack or dessert!

Notes

For a different flavor, you can use dark or white chocolate instead of semi-sweet. Store the matzo crack in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
