Bring 6 cups of water to a gentle boil.
Add the black tea bags and fresh mint leaves to the hot water.
Avoid over-steeping the tea because it can become bitter.
Remove the tea bags and mint leaves.
If you prefer a less sweet punch, start with ¼ cup sugar and adjust to taste.
Stir in the fresh lemon juice and optional lemon zest.
Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.
Transfer the tea mixture to a large pitcher or covered container and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Just before serving, pour the chilled tea mixture into a large punch bowl or pitcher.
Avoid vigorous stirring to preserve the carbonation.
Add plenty of ice, fresh mint sprigs, lemon slices, and optional berries or cucumber slices.
Pour the Mint Tea Punch into chilled glasses and garnish each serving with a fresh mint sprig and lemon slice.
Serve immediately.
- Don't over-steep the tea: Excessive brewing can create bitterness.
- Use fresh mint: Fresh leaves provide a much brighter aroma than dried mint.
- Sweeten while warm: Sugar dissolves much more easily in warm tea.
- Use fresh lemon juice: It gives the punch a cleaner citrus flavor.
- Chill before serving: Cold tea tastes smoother and more refreshing.
- Add sparkling water last: This preserves the fizz.
- Adjust sweetness: Different lemons and teas can vary in intensity.
- Serve immediately after adding fizz: The punch is best while sparkling.
