Ingredients
  

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream (optional for richness)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Arrange half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the dish.
  • Sprinkle with half of the onion slices, salt, and pepper.
  • In a saucepan, melt butter, stir in flour, and cook for 1 minute.
  • Gradually whisk in milk and cream until smooth and slightly thickened.
  • Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, onions, and sauce.
  • Sprinkle cheese on top if using.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake another 30 minutes until golden and tender.

  • Slice potatoes evenly for uniform cooking.
  • Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes work best.
  • Cheese is optional for a traditional version.
  • Resting helps the sauce thicken before serving.
