- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 large eggs
- 1 egg yolk (for egg wash)
- ½ cup warm water
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional)
- Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional topping)
In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water with a pinch of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
Add eggs, oil, and yeast mixture to the dry ingredients.
Knead into a smooth, elastic dough (8–10 minutes).
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled.
Punch down the dough and divide into 3 or 6 equal parts.
Roll each piece into long ropes and braid them.
Place on a baking sheet and let rise again for 30–45 minutes.
Brush with egg yolk and sprinkle seeds if desired.
Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
