- 4 cups masa harina
- 2½ cups warm chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 cup lard or vegetable shortening
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 30–40 dried corn husks, soaked in warm water
Soak corn husks in warm water for at least 30 minutes until pliable.
In a large bowl, beat lard until fluffy. Mix in masa harina, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add warm broth and beat until the dough is soft and spreadable.
Spread a thin layer of masa onto each corn husk.
Add filling down the center of the masa.
Fold sides inward, then fold the bottom up to seal.
Stand tamales upright in a steamer and steam for 1½–2 hours.
