Ingredients

  • 2 cups masa harina
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1 cup refried beans
  • 1/2 pound cooked and seasoned meat (e.g., steak, chicken, or chorizo)
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 cup crumbled queso fresco
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup salsa (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for cooking

Instructions

  • Prepare the Masa Dough:
In a mixing bowl, combine masa harina and warm water. Mix until the dough is smooth and pliable. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  • Shape the Huaraches:
Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and flatten it into an oval shape about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cook the Masa Base:
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place each huarache on the skillet and cook for about 2 minutes on each side, until lightly golden. Remove from heat.
  • Add Refried Beans:
Spread a thin layer of refried beans on one side of each cooked masa base.
  • Fry the Huaraches (Optional):
Heat a small amount of vegetable oil in a skillet and fry the huaraches, bean-side up, until the edges are crispy. This step is optional but adds a delicious crunch.
  • Assemble the Huaraches:
Top the huaraches with cooked meat, lettuce, queso fresco, sour cream, and salsa if desired.
  • Serve and Enjoy:
Serve warm with your favorite side dishes or enjoy them as they are!
