Ingredients
  

  • 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20)
  • 4 burger buns
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar or American cheese
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Pickles (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions
 

  • Heat oil or butter in a skillet and sauté onions until golden and caramelized; set aside.
  • Divide ground beef into 4 equal patties and season with salt and pepper.
  • Grill or pan-cook patties over medium-high heat until desired doneness.
  • Top each patty with cheese during the last minute to melt.
  • Toast burger buns lightly.
  • Spread sauce on buns, add lettuce and tomato, place patty on top, and finish with caramelized onions.

  • Do not overwork the beef when forming patties.
  • Sharp cheddar adds bold flavour.
  • Toasting buns prevents sogginess.
  • Sauce can be customized to taste.
