Ingredients

For the Apples

  • 6 medium Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples
  • 6 wooden sticks
  • Wax paper or parchment paper

For the Homemade Caramel

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt

Instructions

  • Wash the apples thoroughly to remove any wax coating. Dry completely.
  • Insert a wooden stick firmly into the top of each apple.
  • Line a baking tray with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
  • In a heavy saucepan, combine butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, condensed milk, and salt.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the caramel reaches about 245°F (118°C) on a candy thermometer (firm-ball stage).
  • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Allow the caramel to cool for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • Dip each apple into the caramel, rotating to coat evenly.
  • Let excess caramel drip off before rolling the apple in your favorite toppings.
  • Place apples on the prepared tray and allow them to set for 30–45 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use firm, crisp apples for the best texture.
  • Remove all wax from apples so the caramel adheres properly.
  • Dry apples completely before dipping.
  • Homemade caramel provides the richest flavor.
  • Slightly cool the caramel before dipping for a thicker coating.
  • Work quickly before the caramel begins to harden.
  • Refrigerate finished apples for a firmer texture.
  • Serve at room temperature for the softest caramel.
