Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon rosemary
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared with butter and milk)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a baking dish.
  • Heat oil in a skillet, cook onion, carrots, and garlic until tender.
  • Add ground lamb, cook until browned. Stir in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened.
  • Stir in peas, then spread mixture into the baking dish.
  • Top with mashed potatoes, smoothing evenly. Add cheese if desired.
  • Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and bubbly. Let rest before serving.

Notes

  • Use lamb for authentic flavour, beef for cottage pie.
  • Add corn or green beans for variety.
  • Leftovers reheat beautifully in the oven.
  • Make ahead and refrigerate up to 2 days before baking.
  • For extra crispiness, broil the top for 2 minutes.
