Ingredients

  • 8 cups freshly popped popcorn
  • 1 cup green candy melts
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening, if needed
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
  • ¼ cup candy eyeballs
  • 2 tablespoons Halloween sprinkles
  • 2 tablespoons mini chocolate candies, optional
  • A small pinch of salt, optional

Instructions

  • Pop the popcorn using your preferred method. Remove any unpopped kernels and transfer the popcorn to a large mixing bowl. Allow it to cool slightly before adding the candy coating.
For the best results, use plain popcorn without butter or excess seasoning. This helps the candy coating stick evenly and keeps the final snack crisp.
  • Place the green candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat them in 20–30-second intervals, stirring after each interval until smooth.
If the coating seems too thick, stir in a small amount of coconut oil or vegetable shortening. Add the optional vanilla only if it is compatible with your candy coating and does not cause it to thicken.
  • Pour the melted green candy over the popcorn a little at a time. Gently toss with a spatula until most pieces are coated.
Work carefully to avoid crushing the popcorn. For a more dramatic slime effect, leave some pieces lightly coated and drizzle extra green candy over the top.
  • While the coating is still soft, sprinkle candy eyeballs, Halloween sprinkles, and mini chocolate candies over the popcorn. Press larger decorations gently into the coating so they stay in place.
You can also divide the popcorn into separate batches and use different green shades for a monster-inspired look.
  • Spread the coated popcorn in a single layer on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Allow it to cool at room temperature for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until the coating is firm.
Avoid placing warm popcorn directly into an airtight container because trapped moisture can make it sticky.
  • Once the candy coating has hardened, gently separate any large clusters. Transfer the Slime Popcorn to a serving bowl, Halloween-themed container, or individual treat bags.
Serve immediately for the best crunch, or store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Notes

  • Choose plain popcorn: Unsalted popcorn allows the sweet candy coating to stand out.
  • Remove unpopped kernels: Hard kernels can be unpleasant and may pose a choking risk.
  • Use green candy melts: They provide consistent color and are easy to melt.
  • Avoid overheating: Excessive heat can make the coating thick or grainy.
  • Decorate quickly: Add the candy eyeballs and sprinkles before the coating hardens.
  • Keep moisture away: Water can affect the texture of melted candy.
  • Customize the color: Lime green, neon green, and two-tone green all work well for Halloween.
  • Check ingredient labels: Choose toppings that suit your guests' dietary needs and allergies.
