Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb ground turkey or plant-based protein
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (or vegan alternative)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 whole-wheat burger buns
  • Optional: shredded lettuce, pickles, or coleslaw for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add chopped onion and bell pepper; sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  • tir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Add ground turkey or plant-based protein to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon.
  • Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
  • Toast the burger buns, if desired.
  • Spoon the Sloppy Jane mixture onto the buns. Garnish with your choice of toppings and serve warm.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, use lentils or crumbled tofu instead of turkey.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne for extra spice if desired.
