Cuisine Italian
- 1 pound spaghetti
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tbsp dried basil
- 1/4 tbsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or basil, chopped (for garnish)
- Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
Cook the Spaghetti: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside. Prepare the Sauce Base: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef or sausage and cook until browned. Remove any excess fat. Sauté Aromatics: Add chopped onion and garlic to the skillet. Cook until softened and fragrant, about 3-5 minutes. Build the Sauce: Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Combine and Serve: Toss the cooked spaghetti with the sauce until evenly coated. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley or basil and grated Parmesan cheese.
