Ingredients

  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tbsp dried basil
  • 1/4 tbsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley or basil, chopped (for garnish)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)

Instructions

  • Cook the Spaghetti:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • Prepare the Sauce Base:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef or sausage and cook until browned. Remove any excess fat.
  • Sauté Aromatics:
Add chopped onion and garlic to the skillet. Cook until softened and fragrant, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Build the Sauce:
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Combine and Serve:
Toss the cooked spaghetti with the sauce until evenly coated. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley or basil and grated Parmesan cheese.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add a splash of red wine to the sauce while it simmers.
  • Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat for dietary preferences.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
