Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
  • 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In an ungreased 8-inch square baking pan, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Make three small wells in the dry mixture.
  • Pour vanilla into one well, vinegar into the second, and oil into the third.
  • Pour water over the entire mixture and stir until smooth.
  • Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool before serving. Enjoy plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or topped with frosting.

Notes

  • Mix ingredients directly in the baking pan to save cleanup.
  • The vinegar reacts with baking soda to create a light, fluffy texture.
  • No need for frosting, but a dusting of powdered sugar or cocoa enhances flavour.
